This whole thing started a long time ago thanks to some very enterprising students that wanted to attend the FMC Conference in NYC. We had a great time. The students met many of my professional friends, and won many, many prizes.
The direct of the conference asked the students if they wanted to come work the NAB show for FMC. We discussed working vs. attending NAB, and the students went and it was a 50/50 mix of awesome vs. miserable.
After that, we came up with the NAB trip. For many years I organized hotels rooms, visits, and parties. It out me in a lot of debt, and many people went without caring about the NAB conference.
In 2023, we brought it back with new rules. In 2024, the group that went completely redefined the trip and how amazing it can be for people!
A few facts:
What is NAB?
NAB refers to the National Association of Broadcasters. The NAB conference – which happens the same time as the BEA (Broadcast Education Association) Conference – is always in Las Vegas in April. The conference is a showcase of new equipment, new techniques, and discussions with professionals in television, film, social media, etc. This year, the conference is April 6- 9.
How much is it?
It’s free. No lie. A floor pass is $150, but codes always come to get these passes for free.
Why do you say it’s not an “official trip”?
Because this is in no way associated with the college, university, university system, etc. I go every year. I pay for it. If you go, you are going because you want to go, and you are seeing me there as a professional editor. Plus, this is not “credit based” at all. You’re an adult, and you will be treated as such. I mean, come on…Dr. Bernabo is all about that for the LA Trip.
If that is the case, what are the expectations?
You deal with your own travel, hotel, food, etc. I will arrange meetings with friends, talks if possible, and times to meet up and talk about how to professionally mingle for work.
Ok, so are their like meetings or something?
The first in-person meetings for the trip will begin after the UGA Fall Break. I will send information via this crappy website and emails.
Rumor has it you drive to Las Vegas…seriously?
I do. I often have meetings along the way with universities, work on music for my friend, or simply explore the vast worlds of Loves and BUC’Cees. Plus, I’m not big on flying after COVID.
Do students ever drive?
Yes. Last year, our beloved Piper drove out. She had a blast.
If I come to the meetings, am I obligated to go?
Nope. You’re an adult. You make the decision.
So, what do you go over in these meetings?
Hotels. Food. Flights. Driving information. The Strip. Downtown. Freemont. Uber (so much Uber). How the conference works. How much money you should save. Why you need to hydrate weeks before you get to Las Vegas. Why you do not stay at Circus Circus. Why you shouldn’t compromise your spring break to do this if you have big spring break plans and limited funds. How many days you “need” to attend the conference. Why it starts on April 6, and not April 5 for us…and so much more.
Can I get on a list or something?
Sure. Just UGAMail me.
More information soon! Thanks, everyone!
